What is Halal?

Halal, an Arabic term meaning “permissible,” refers to anything allowed within the guidelines of the Islamic faith. When applied to food, it encompasses specific rules about what Muslims can eat or drink and how these items should be prepared.

Halal food must meet stringent criteria, including a ritual slaughter process, adherence to health standards, and the exclusion of pork and blood byproducts. Halal meats include options like beef, chicken, lamb, goat, and fish, while pigs, carnivorous animals, and omnivores are not considered halal.

For meat to qualify as halal, animals must be raised and treated humanely. The slaughter itself must follow ethical practices, such as ensuring the animal does not witness the slaughter of others. A Muslim must conduct the process, reciting “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar,” meaning “With God’s blessings, God is Great,” before making a clean cut with a sharp knife. The animal is then allowed to bleed thoroughly before proceeding to further processing.

Halal represents not only dietary rules but also a commitment to humane and ethical practices, offering peace of mind and quality assurance to those who follow these guidelines.
